How to Apply Mascara the Right Way

Mascara can really bring out the beauty of your eyes by making your eyelashes look more dramatic. However, you should be aware about the right ways to use this beauty product to your advantage. Whether you’re using mascara from a luxury line or one from a regular drugstore brand, it’s important to know how to put it on correctly. After all, no one wants to look like a panda with darkened, smudged-up eyes. Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Have the right mascara(s) and tools on hand

Even if you already have one mascara in your makeup kit, you can always add a second one. By matching and layering different types of mascara, you’ll get double the effect and twice the benefits. You can, for instance, check out the different mascara options from the Kiss Me Heroine line by Isehan to look for ones that work best for you.

Of course, you’ll also need some items to help with mascara application. First is an eyelash curler, which preps your lashes and makes your eyes already look bigger. Then you should also have some tissue paper for cleaning up the wand. Finally, make sure you have eye makeup remover to get rid of smudges—or to wipe it all off at the end of the day.

  1. Curl your lashes before putting mascara on
Many women make the mistake of curling their lashes after putting on mascara. Of course, that doesn’t end up quite well. The curler will either smudge the wet mascara or the lashes end up sticking to the curler, with the mascara as glue. And if you wait for the mascara to dry before curling, it won’t work either, as lashes will be less flexible by then. In fact, lashes with dried-up mascara are more prone to breaking. So yes, curl first to avoid any messy situations.

  2. Prep your wand
As we’ve mentioned above, you’ll need tissue paper to clean your wand before application. That’s because when you pull the wand out of the tube, it will pick up a lot more mascara than you actually need. And when you put on too much product, you’ll end up with clumpy lashes. Hence, you have to make sure to wipe off the excess mascara from the wand before application.

Another trick that you can employ is to bend your mascara wands. A bent wand is easier to handle, especially when applying mascara on hard-to-reach areas like the inner and outer corners of the eyes. Just make sure to do it carefully and gently to avoid snapping the wand.

  1. Start with the bottom lashes
By starting with the bottom set of eyelashes, you’ll get to avoid leaving those small black mascara dots on your eyelids and under the eyes. After all, these dots are usually left behind by your top lashes as you look down. While there’s also a risk of smudging mascara on the cheeks when you apply it on the bottom lashes first, all you have to do is to tilt your head a bit forward to avoid this.

  2. Then continue to the top
To finish your look, apply the mascara on the top lashes. To do so, use a zig-zagging motion when applying to help create a curled effect on your lashes. Feel free to do two or three coats to get your desired thickness.

As these five tips show, applying mascara need not be challenging. Just follow these to enjoy a full-lash look for an entire day!
