Stenciled hair is exactly what it sounds like — using a stencil to dye a specific design onto your hair. This hair art trend began with artist and hairstylist Janine Ker. For her stencil work, the mane maven seems to first sketch out a design then bring it to life on her clients’ heads. She’s created everything from polka dots to lotus blossoms on hair, but we’re particularly impressed by the garden of flowers she imprinted into one woman’s strands. Ker generally uses temporary hair coloring products, so there’s no real commitment, but if you wanted you could use a more permanent product for the same effect, just longer lasting!

The best part is that anyone can achieve this look. You can purchase stencils at any craft store and find various temporary spray hair colors at a beauty supply store. Hold the stencils up to your hair, spray the hair color, and finish the entire look off with some hair spray to keep it all into place. It may not be as easy the very first time but like any work of art, experimenting and practising can turn you into a pro in short time. And remember, if your hair is naturally dark certain colors will be less visible than others.
