Manicures are meant to be a relaxing half hour or so, but also they can be fraught with decisions that are just too overwhelming to make in a massage armchair. Once you choose the right polish color, the next salon challenge you’ll face is picking a shape. Whether you keep your nails short or long, nail shape can make a huge difference in the way your nails look. The square, oval, rounded and almond shape are four of the most basic shapes, but recently the stiletto and coffin shape have become much more popular.
Like I said, coffin nails or so called ballerina nails have been on the scene for some time now, but after being made popular by celebs such as Kylie Jenner, Demi Lovato and Rita Ora, they are the must-have nail shape at the moment. This shape is similar to stiletto, but with a squared off tip (that makes it look like a coffin, or in a slightly less macabre description—a ballerina slipper). Usually seen in a moody dark greys, nudes or blacks, the coffin nail also looks gorgeous in plum hues, dark red and purple. Top off in a matte top coat for a super modern take on the trend.
How to DIY:
Start with a basic square shape. Then using a file that’s not too rough or too soft, file the sides at a slight angle, alternating with a few light swipes on the left, and the same number of light swipes on the right to keep things even. (In other words, don’t file one side all the way and then move to the other side, or else it’s too easy for the nail to come out uneven! Patience is key.) Once you have the symmetrical shape and length you prefer, finish the corners of the tips with quick, light filing that either keeps the edges square and sharp or soft and rounded – the preference is yours.
