It’s inevitable that many of us will go through periods of ill health in our lifetime. Sometimes this can be a confidence-drainer, or they can take their toll on our physical appearance. Looking after yourself is one of the most important things you can do when it comes to recovering after a bad patch of physical health. Whatever the culprit or cause, be sure to be kind to yourself.
Get medical treatment
Not all illnesses can be cured with herbal teas and relaxation, and so if you are still seriously ill, it’s always worth going to your doctor for further advice. On top of your self-care regime, it’s a good idea to get some medical treatment too.
Ensure the culprit is dealt with
Ill health can have a multitude of causes. However, if there is a specific culprit, then it’s wise to deal with this, so you don’t continue to face an on-going battle with your personal health. If you have IBS or an intolerance, be sure to go to a clinic to get an official diagnosis. Or, if the damage was physical, either from an employer or medical negligence, you may want to take legal action. Approaching a legal advisor, such as Minton Morrill Solicitors, could help get you some much-needed legal help with fixing the issue in hand.
Take up a gentle, new hobby
Being bed-bound or tired for long stretches of time can be demoralizing due to your lack of ability to complete everyday tasks, or perhaps exercise in the way you once used to do. See your period of rest as an opportunity to pick up a new hobby or do something you don’t normally afford yourself the opportunity to do. Whether you don’t read as much as you used to, or you’ve always wanted to pick up painting, it could be an opportunity to reward yourself with a new skill.
Be cautious of notifications
If your recent bout of illness has caused you to be tired or extremely exhausted, be mindful of the notifications popping up on electronic devices – all of which are now commonplace in modern life. If work colleagues or friends are messaging you in abundance, you may wish to manage their expectations. Either putting an out of office or a careful reminder in place to remind them you are resting will help to prevent you from exhausting yourself with social management.
Improve your diet
If you’ve been existing off a diet of pasta and pizza, now might be a good opportunity to reform your diet. Eating well and maintaining a balanced combination of fruit, vegetables, protein, and complex carbohydrates will ensure that your body is getting the minerals and vitamins it requires to function on a daily basis.
Self-care is a very broad term, but in essence, it just means keeping a balance in your mental and physical health. Looking after yourself might not just mean eating enough fruit and veg, but also taking time out of checking constant notifications to turn off your phone and relax.
